Hluboka Castle – Civil weddings only

Visible from far off, on a stone outcropping where the Vltava River leaves Ceské Budejovice basin, stands the Chateau of Hluboká. The original Gothic castle was built in the late 13th century at the command of King Václav I. Along with nearby Ceské Budejovice; it was a focal point of royal power along the Vltava River. With the death of King Premysl Otakar II in 1276, Hluboká fell into the hands of South Bohemia's powerful Vítkovec family. Then, in 1290, the head of the Vitkovec family, Záviš z Falkenštejna was executed by King Václav II, and the castle with its estate was once again the property of the King. Hluboká would change hands 26 times before the beginning of the 16th century.. The chateau acquired its present appearance under Prince Jan Adolf II and his wife Eleonor. Influenced by modern Romanticism, they renovated the chateau, in Tudor Gothic after the style of Windsor Castle in England (the reconstruction lasted from 1840 - 1871). Design was by Viennese architect F. Beer, and after his death work was completed by F. Deworetzky.
The castle is approximately two hours away from Prague.
